More to follow as they are confirmed. See you on the road.
Yesterday I had a moment of clarity. Well, a reassurance of the moment I once had. This week has been hard. The UK is always fun to tour but a completely different experience compared to touring the mainland. It’s not that people don’t care about what we do in the UK (although some undoubtedly don’t give a shit) it’s just in terms of food, accommodation and payment etc the standards are a lot higher on the mainland. This means that by yesterday, after just one week in England, I was exhausted. I drove us from Newcastle to London yesterday and by the time we reached the Brixton Windmill I was ready to sleep for a week. I played my show however and then went to sleep in the van until the Liberation guys went on. And it was then: standing in front of the stage, groggy, sore, grumpy and hungry that I realised why I do this. Its the pleasure that watching a fantastic band brings to you. It’s the knowledge that even though the guys were just as down and as tired as me they still took to the stage and gave their all. That much belief and willingness to do anything you can to show what you are capable of doesn’t come along very often in other walks of life. But is in abundance in those who play music and who tour endlessly to spread the word. The Liberation Service are an awesome band and they have helped me through some tough times and so, even though we have a 14 hour drive tonight, I will be sad to get out of the van at the end of it. X
The first night away from home is always one of mixed emotions for me. One month on the road is pretty daunting from the early side of things but it invariably passes quicker than you can imagine and always leaves you wanting more.
I’m in Vienna which has become something of a home away from home for me in the 6 months since i first came here. This is my third trip since march and i feel comfortable in this beautiful city among some wonderful friends. However, i can’t help but feel a tinge of anxiety about the coming weeks and where they will take me.
Today i left my two best friends for the last time in our flat as they continue their lives and i continue mine. Last week it was the same with my girlfriend. It’s a sad time but chosing to follow this path is just that: a choice. We make sacrifices for something we believe in and hope it will work out in the end. Preferably before we’ve said goodbye to all our comforts, be they good friends or a comfortable life.
I wrote this song after my last tour and it plays heavily on my mind at time like this:
‘Weeks pass in days spent wishing for the next, it won be long before you’re gone. It’s strange to think that before summer’s through everything we knew will be gone, a lack of comfort makes us strong. So you’ll go your way and i’ll go mine and maybe we’ll meet elsewhere someday.’
I suppose this might all read as self indulgent rubbish but hey, isn’t that what blogs are for?
Mark

Mark
So after a few months off I will be playing a bunch of shows this next week. It’s not quite the epic month long tour I would love to be on but it sure is nice to be planning my week around gigs again.
It all kicks off tonight with a last minute show in Paris. (Details at the bottom of this post) Then on Tuesday I will be welcoming the mighty Chris T-T to Paris and I really couldn’t be more excited about it! Chris is an inspiring songwriter and a brilliant performer so it promises to be a great show. On Thursday I am flying to Austria for a few days to play some music and hang out with some lovely people. Austria was definitely one on my favourite places on the tour with PJ Bond and I am so pleased to be going back so soon. My last night in Austria is the 19th June when I will be opening for Frank Turner in Vienna. To say that I am excited would be a massive understatement. As many of you know, Frank has been a huge influence on my music and to finally have the chance to share a bill with him is a really big deal for me. He has just released a new album called ‘England Keep My Bones’ and if you haven’t already heard it I recommend you check it out, it’s beautiful.
So there it is, my upcoming week. Awesome.
Here are the dates:
10/06 - Be There, Paris. Free entry. 8pm.
14/06 - Chiquitos, Paris. €5. 7pm. With Chris T-T and Fanny DX
17/06 - GH Farkas, Rotenturm (AU). €3. 8pm
19/06 - B72, Vienna (AU). SOLD OUT. With Frank Turner
I’m hoping to fill up the two spare days in Austria but for now that it’s all and I must say I’m pretty happy about it!
Maybe see you there?
I’m sitting on the edge of the stage in the ACU in Utrecht, Holland having just eaten a delicious meal. There are nice people sitting around me and good beer, I feel pretty good.
If you will allow me to rewind a week or so I feel like it would be worthwhile for me to recap a little about my experiences on tour so far.
Part of me just wants to list the names of all the wonderful people I have met over the past 10 days just to give you an idea of how cool it really is being able to turn up in a country you have never even been to and find people who care enough to feed you and put a roof over your head. However, I feel that’s probably not interesting for you or quite what Brave or Invincible had in mind when they asked me to keep a blog…
I have spent the last 10 days fluctuating between excitement and nerves depending on a. what time of the day it is, b. what is happening at the time and c. where we are sleeping/eating. This tour is always something I have wanted to do and am extremely grateful for the opportunity but on the other hand it hasn’t been easy for me to force my anxious self to relax and go for it.
PJ has been a constant level head and a sense of wonder to me. As he put it, we are just ‘cut from a different cloth’. Being able to tour with someone who has been living this life for almost 10 years has taught me a lot which I hope will prepare me for future tours.
I really should go into detail about each of the gigs and who we met, the great bands we have played with and the amazing people who have looked after us…but I’m tired. Rest assured this in no way belittles how I feel about these people and the long list of thanks I need to write! It will appear at a later date.
For now I have a gig to play with Wilhelm from Antillectual and of course PJ Bond and I am super excited about 3 days in the Netherlands. So I’ll just leave you with that for now…

Next week I leave on my first ever European tour and also my longest tour to date. 8 countries and over 30 gigs is somewhat overwhelming for someone who has only ever toured the UK a week at a time. ‘How did someone like Mark manage to book a tour like that?!’ I hear you ask. Well…I didn’t. I will be supporting the marvelous PJ Bond (http://theblacknumbers.com/artist_pjBond.html) on the entire trip after he was kind enough to invite me out with him.

I am pleased to announce that I will also be selling my first official t-shirts on tour as well as a small amount of beanies and scarfs! I’m so professional these days.
So finally, if I could ask you a favour? As well as (hopefully) coming to the shows if you could tell your friends about this epic adventure of mine? Maybe you have a cousin in Dietmold or a penpal in Rome that might enjoy a night of acoustic music? It would be really amazing to see friendly faces in each city.

Mark McCabe is a singer/songwriter from Aberdeen, Scotland. UK Folk stalwart and writer Chris T-T describes his music as, ‘Melancholic, witty and moving acoustic songs from Aberdeen's rising star who faced impending fame in Scotland by running away to Paris’
At the end of 2010 he released an ep titled 'When I Grow Up' which was met with much aclaim including entries in two 'top ten records of the year' lists. Since then he has played upwards of 100 shows all across Europe touring with the likes of PJ Bond from New Jersey and Austria's finest punk bands Astpai and The Liberation Service.
Over the years Mark has had the pleasure of sharing a stage with many great performers including, Chris T-T, Frank Turner, Get Cape.Wear Cape.Fly, Meursault, Lemuria, Grass Cut, Serafina Steer, The Flatliners, The Arteries and many many more. Having performed at 2009s Lexapalooza Lite in London he was asked to return in 2011 for their one day festival on the 12th February and also played Brighton's wonderful Midwinter Picnic in January.
Late last year Mark came 2nd in a UK wide competition to release a split single with Frank Turner, a competition which was judged by him and his label Xtra Mile. Furthermore, in June this year Mark supported Frank at the B72 in Vienna to a sold out audience of 250.
Having now moved back to the UK after two years living in Paris Mark will be touring for around 5 months this year and will also record his second full length album.
Selected Press:
'Mark McCabe is a young Aberdonian who wears his heart on his sleeve. McCabe recently relocated to Paris, and it would seem the move has inspired much of the material on ‘When I Grow Up’. For example, on ‘I Used To Be Eloquent’ McCabe laments his flimsy grasp of the French language and berates himself for being an ‘ignorant foreigner’.
The downtrodden singer-songwriter unburdening himself of his woes is a bit of a stereotype, but McCabe’s songs are clearly lovingly crafted. There is a real wit to some of the lyrics and songs like ‘Salt and Pepper’ have a strong emotional pull.
The EP finishes with a cover of ‘Just Go Home’ by Aberdeen band The Xcerts. It’s a fine track that works a treat when given the acoustic treatment and it’s a testament to the strength of McCabe’s own material that it slots in nicely with the rest. The personal nature of McCabe’s songs could be a bit ‘emo’ for some, but to these ears they carry an honesty and sincerity that lifts them above the angsty-songwriter pack.' **** Is This Music?
'Mark couples ramshackle cynical folk musings together with upbeat quirky pop songs. Why not check him out?' The FLY
'Paris based Mark McCabe likes to "moan about things through song". Having been a highlight for many at the last Lexapalooza Lite, Mark returns to a later time slot with his intelligent brand of folk pop. One to watch for the future, and not to be missed.' Lexapalooza
